Title Oath of the Horatii (1785 -85)
Artist Jacques - Louis David

History David, the grandfather of Neoclassicism, painted Oath of the Horatii during the time of the French Revolution. In ancient Rome, the Horatii brothers were sent to fight the Albans, despite a marriage between the two sides. In classical tradition, the painting emphasizes valor and courage over love, and was thus used as an allegory by David to inspire loyalty to Napoleon
