A Bar at the Folies-Bergere
London, The courtauld Institute Galleries
Manet's last masterpiece is a melancholic farewell to the jovial life of Parisian entertainment. The brilliant still life on the marble counter, the barmaidís resigned expression, and the mirror with its myriad reflected details have often been commented upon. The exciting quality of the painting makes one almost forget the difficulties Manet experienced during its execution when he often had to interrupt his work for reasons of poor health.
